Derivan

Derivan established its roots in 1958 as Vynol Paints and has since become a cornerstone of Australian art manufacturing. Guided by the founders' enduring philosophy of providing artists with environmentally and socially responsible products, the company meticulously develops a diverse range of professional acrylics, mediums, water-based printmaking inks, and specialised materials. This commitment to innovation was further solidified in 2017, when Derivan became the first company in the world to successfully commercialise YInMn Blue as an acrylic paint, continuing a long legacy of excellence within the international arts community.

History

In the 1960s, the company became the first in the world to commercialise student-grade acrylic paint. This was followed by the successful development and commercialisation of non-toxic, safe screen-printing and printmaking inks.

In the 1970s, observing that artists were applying Derivan acrylics to their skin due to their non-toxic properties, the company successfully commercialised the world’s first cosmetic-grade Face & Body Paint specifically designed for use on the skin.

Upon entering the 21st century, the company continued its tradition of innovation by commercialising unique art materials such as Liquid Pencil and Dry Mediums.

Products

Derivan's range includes acrylic paints and the Matisse series of professional-grade artist acrylics.

The Matisse range offers a comprehensive selection of Australian colors across various viscosities to suit every artistic application. This includes the high-viscosity Matisse Structure, low-viscosity Matisse Flow, and highly fluid Matisse Fluid, as well as the matte-finish Matisse Background and Matisse Ink series. Complementing these are Matisse Mediums—available in both wet and dry forms—which can be freely intermixed to achieve custom textures and effects.

Beyond its acrylic ranges, Derivan produces watercolors manufactured using traditional methods, where pigments are stone-ground to enhance and preserve their natural brilliance. This collection, known as Derivan Watercolours, includes unique Australian hues alongside solvent-free screen-printing and printmaking inks.

At its launch, Derivan Face & Body Paint was the world's first skin-safe acrylic paint developed in accordance with both Australian and EU cosmetic standards.

Award

  • In 2017, Derivan’s Liquid Pencil was awarded second place for the Creative Product Award at Messe Frankfurt in Germany.
  • In 2016, the company was honoured with the Sustainability Award from the City of Canada Bay, Australia, in recognition of its significant contributions to environmental development and progress.
