Derek Anthony Coleman (August 10, 1989 – February 11, 2023) was an American and humanitarian volunteer best known for his volunteer medical work in Mosul, Iraq, and for co-founding the medical humanitarian organisation Global Response Management (also known as Global Response Medicine, GRM). He was profiled in U.S. media for frontline medical volunteer work during the 2016–2017 battle for Mosul and later served in leadership roles with GRM.[1][2]

Volunteer work in Mosul

In 2016 Coleman traveled to northern Iraq as a volunteer medic during the Iraqi offensive to retake Mosul from ISIS. He created frontline field clinics treating both Iraqi soldiers and civilian casualties under dangerous conditions, and was profiled by major U.S. news outlets for this work.[1][3]

A PBS NewsHour feature highlighted Coleman and other American volunteers who risked their lives to treat Mosul’s wounded.[4]

Founding Global Response Management

Following his experience in Mosul, Coleman co-founded Global Response Management with fellow volunteer Pete Reed in 2017.[2] GRM is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) organization described as a veteran-led international medical NGO delivering emergency medical care, training, and capacity building in low-resource and conflict-affected settings.[5]

Media coverage

Coleman and Reed were profiled in U.S. media for their volunteer work in Mosul, including PBS and Associated Press coverage.[1][4]

He was also interviewed in The Medics of Mosul, a recorded discussion of frontline volunteer medicine.[6]

The Viceland documentary series Hunting ISIS covers American volunteers in the fight against ISIS. While the program focuses on several American medics and fighters, published sources do not consistently list Coleman as a principal credited participant.[7]

Death

In early February 2023, both GRM co-founders Pete Reed and Derek Coleman died within days of one another. GRM announced Coleman’s death following complications related to cancer treatment.[8]

Legacy

Coleman is remembered for frontline emergency medical volunteering in Mosul and for co-founding an NGO that continues to deliver emergency medical training and assistance in Iraq and other regions.[5]
