Aziz Nabavi (1932, Bandar Anzali – November 1, 2003, Montreux, Switzerland) was a university professor, author, entrepreneur, and founder of the Higher Institute of Accounting (today Shahid Shamsipour Technical College) in Iran.
Biography
Aziz Nabavi was born in 1932 in Bandar Anzali and later lived in Tehran. He first earned a bachelor's degree in law and then a master's degree in administrative sciences. He was admitted to the first doctoral program in Iran and received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Tehran. In 1960, he obtained a doctorate in administrative sciences with a specialization in accounting from the University of Southern California. Nabavi served as professor at the Faculty of Law, Political Science and Economics of the University of Tehran, professor at the Faculty of Economics and Banking of the National University of Iran (today Shahid Beheshti University), and founder and president of the Higher Institute of Accounting.
He began his public service career at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, where he worked for many years as senior advisor. He also served as financial advisor to the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Post, Telegraph and Telephone. Nabavi was director of Tejarat (Commerce) magazine of the Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Tehran, member of the board of directors of the Iranian Association of Certified Accountants, editor-in-chief of Banks magazine at the Ministry of Finance, and Iran’s representative at the World Conference on Finance in Italy in 1964. His vision of establishing a specialized accounting school was realized with the founding of the Higher Institute of Accounting in 1964, a major achievement that transformed accounting education in Iran. By introducing university-level and professional training in accounting, Nabavi helped shape the careers of thousands of young people and contributed to the modernization of the accounting profession in Iran. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern accounting education in the country.
In addition to more than thirty years of teaching in Iran, the United States, and Switzerland, Nabavi authored the two-volume Principles of Accounting, which has been reprinted many times. The distinguishing feature of this work is its comprehensive coverage of accounting and its adaptation to Iranian conditions. Together with Hassan Sajadi Nejad and Esmaeil Erfani, Nabavi is considered one of the founders of the accounting profession in Iran. Through the establishment of the National Iranian Oil Company’s Higher School of Accounting and the Higher Institute of Accounting, they trained more than 6,000 graduates in accounting, governmental accounting, and auditing.
In his own words: "My pride is that I have educated thousands of young graduates for my country. Since 1976, I have been a professor in Switzerland, teaching scientific research methods, financial accounting, and management accounting at the European University of Switzerland."
Works
Nabavi authored Principles of Auditing and Principles of Governmental Accounting, and published numerous works in English and French.
