David Hynam is a financial services executive who has served as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Liverpool Victoria (also known as LV=) since September 2022.[1][2][3] He is also serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of HomeServe UK, a position he has held since 2017.[4]
He was previously CEO of Bupa Global and UK, CEO of Friends Life Group's UK business, and group chief operating officer for AXA.[5][6]
Early life and education
Born in Tredegar, Wales in 1971, David Hynam grew up in South Wales and attended Bedwellty Comprehensive in the Rhymney Valley.[7] He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Management from the University of Kent and graduated in 1992.[8]
Career
Hynam began his corporate career at Barclays in 1992, where he held a variety of roles before becoming the Chief Operating Officer at Barclays' Offshore business.[9]
He joined AXA UK in 2001 in a senior operations role, where he oversaw operations for the UK and Ireland.[10] In June 2010, Hynam was appointed Executive Director of Operations at Friends Life Group (formerly Resolution).[11][12]
Hynam joined Bupa in 2014 as UK Transformation Director. In 2015, he became the General Manager of Care Services, and in 2016, he was appointed CEO of the UK Market Unit.[13] During his time at Bupa, he spoke publicly about diversity, equity and inclusion in an interview with the Guardian.[14][15] He was appointed to the HomeServe Membership Board as a non-executive director and Chair of the Remuneration Committee in 2014 and became Chairman of the UK Board in 2017, a role he is still active in.[16]
Hynam became the CEO of Liverpool Victoria in September 2022,[17][18] succeeding Mark Hartigan after a period of turbulence at the business ending with a failed takeover bid.[19] He has since delivered a turnaround in the mutual's financial results[20][21]
Recognition and awards
David Hynam has been recognised for his advocacy in promoting diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace[22][19]. He was ranked 1st in the world in the 2024 INvolve Outstanding Executives Role Model list for LGBTQ+ inclusion,[23][24][25] 3rd globally (1st in the UK) in the 2024 INvolve Empower Advocates list for his work supporting people of colour[26] and 4th in the 2024 INvolve Heroes Advocates list for his support for gender equality.[27] He was also featured on Fortune's Global LGBTQ Business Leaders list[28] and 2024 British LGBT Awards list of Inspirational Leaders[29].
David has been acknowledged multiple times for his advocacy work for LGBTQ+ communities,[30] women and people of colour.[31][32] While at AXA, he served as a Global Diversity Champion and featured on several lists for his contributions to gender parity.[33][34][35] Additionally, he was ranked 7th globally by Yahoo Finance among CEOs of major companies identifying as LGBTQ+[36][37]
Most recently, in 2025, David was named among the top 10 most influential figures in finance and legal on the Attitude 101 list by Attitude magazine [38]. He was also recognised in the Top 10 of the British LGBT Awards[39] and honoured in the Metro Pride Awards[40]. Additionally, he and LV= were shortlisted for the 2025 British Diversity Awards by The Voice Online[41].
