Con-solatio is a nonprofit organization based in Brooklyn, New York, that sends young volunteers to serve in impoverished neighborhoods around the world.
History
Con-solatio traces its origins to the US affiliate of the French humanitarian movement Points Cœur, known as Heart's Home USA. The organization was incorporated under that name and operates a mission house in Brooklyn, which was featured in The New York Times in 2012.[1] The organization adopted its current name, Con-solatio, in 2021.[2]
The renaming coincided with the dissolution of all ecclesiastical structures of Points Cœur between 2017 and 2020, following the conviction and laicization of its founder Thierry de Roucy for sexual abuse and abuse of power.[3]
Activities
Con-solatio sends young volunteers aged 18–35 on missions of 14 to 24 months to serve in impoverished neighborhoods in 18 countries across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Volunteers live in small communities and visit lonely and suffering people in their neighborhoods, as well as in nursing homes, hospitals, and shelters.[4]
In 2022–23, the Con-solatio team in Brooklyn visited 420 people at their homes on a regular basis, organized 33 community-building events, and visited 6 facilities monthly or weekly.[5]
The experiences of Con-solatio missionaries have been compiled in the book Come Abide: Con-solatio and the Ministry of Presence, which gathers letters and testimonies from volunteers describing their encounters with the poor and lonely.[6]
Con-solatio has received the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency, reflecting its commitment to public accountability as a nonprofit organization.[7]
Legal status
Con-solatio is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and states on its website that it is listed in the Official Catholic Directory.[8] Its parent organization Points Cœur has had no canonical recognition from the Catholic Church since 2020. In August 2023, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, wrote to the French bishops urging them to ensure that Points Cœur and its affiliated organizations do not continue to present themselves as Catholic religious communities.[9]
