Caleb Slain is an American film director, screenwriter, and editor based in Los Angeles. His work includes the short films Demon (2017) and Enough (2021) and the virtual reality documentary Marshall from Detroit (2019), which premiered in the New Frontier program of the Sundance Film Festival.[1]

Career

Early work

Slain directed the short documentary It Ain't Over (2012), which profiles a man living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.[2] The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and was later screened at the Telluride Film Festival.[3][4]

In 2013 he directed the short film Free Pie, which was featured by Short of the Week.[5]

Short films

Slain wrote and directed the short film Demon (2017).[6] Sports Video Group reported that the film was shot near Joshua Tree National Park using low-light cinematography techniques and a Panasonic VariCam 35 camera.[7] The film received the Jury Award for Narrative Short at the 2017 Austin Film Festival.[8]

In 2021 Slain directed the short film Enough, which he co-wrote with Nathan Nzanga. The film premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Festival.[9]

Virtual reality

Slain directed the virtual reality documentary Marshall from Detroit (2019), featuring Eminem and radio host Sway Calloway.[10] The project premiered in the New Frontier program of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.[1]

Commercial work

In 2012 Slain directed the launch video for Microsoft's Surface tablet. Business Insider reported that Microsoft selected Slain, then 22 years old, to direct the campaign instead of working with its established advertising agencies.[11] The campaign and its production were also discussed in HuffPost.[12]

In 2015 Slain was signed for commercial representation by the production company Little Minx.[13]
