The Wave Of Terrorism in UK 2017 refers to a series of terrorist attacks in the United Kingdom between March and September 2017. The period was marked by multiple Islamist extremist attacks and one far-right terrorist attack, causing mass casualties and leading to heightened national security responses.

The events are sometimes compared to the German Autumn, due to the concentration of politically motivated violence within a short time period.

Background

In the mid-2010s, the United Kingdom faced an increased threat from terrorism, particularly from individuals inspired by Islamist extremist groups such as the Islamic State. At the same time, concerns over rising far-right extremism were also growing.

Security services had disrupted numerous plots prior to 2017, but several attacks were still carried out successfully. Public spaces, transport systems, and major events were considered high-risk targets.

Timeline of events

Westminster attack

On 22 March 2017, a vehicle was driven into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before the attacker fatally stabbed a police officer at the Palace of Westminster. Five victims were killed and around 50 injured.

Manchester Arena bombing

On 22 May 2017, a suicide bombing occurred at Manchester Arena following a concert. Twenty-two people were killed and over 1,000 injured, making it the deadliest attack in the UK since 2005.

London Bridge attack

On 3 June 2017, attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge and carried out stabbings in Borough Market. Eight people were killed and dozens injured.

Finsbury Park attack

On 19 June 2017, a van was driven into Muslim worshippers near Finsbury Park Mosque. One person died and several others were injured. The attack was linked to far-right extremism.

Parsons Green bombing

On 15 September 2017, an improvised explosive device partially detonated on a London Underground train at Parsons Green tube station, injuring 30 people.

Response

Following the attacks, the UK government raised the national threat level to "critical" on multiple occasions. Military personnel were deployed under Operation Temperer to support police across the uk.

The attacks led to expanded counter-terrorism powers, increased armed policing, and intensified efforts to monitor online radicalisation. Political debate also focused on security policy, extremism, and community relations.
