Ben Thompson (born 1981) is a British journalist and news presenter who anchors business coverage of the BBC News Channel. As the main anchor of the Business Today show on weekdays and Talking Business at the weekends he is the face of business coverage to BBC audiences around the world. In the UK he regularly presenters BBC Breakfast on BBC One at the weekend.
Career
Thompson's first on-air role was as Middle East Business Correspondent based in Dubai, a role he began in 2012. He has also been based in New York as a business correspondent. His move into presenting started with the launch of a new daily business show called Business Live in 2015 [1]. Since then he has presented the business news on BBC Breakfast as well as regularly covering the main news on the BBC News Channel and the BBC News at One, on BBC One. In May 2024 he presented the last ever edition of World Business Report.
Major stories that Thompson has covered include UK general elections and budget coverage, Brexit and the covid pandemic. When presenting business shows he regularly interviews leading politicians and policymakers and CEOs.
As well as the United States he has reported from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Lebanon, Tunisia, Egypt, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE,[2]
Personal life
Thompson lives in London with his partner who he met whilst working in Dubai and regularly posts about his devotion to keeping fit.[3][4]His private life is frequently the subject of speculation in newspapers but he shares little detail. [5]
In 2025 Thompson was the victim of a street robbery in London which saw his £7,000 rolex targeted. He had been targeted when leaving a restaurant in Mayfair, London with his friend Roja Dove who also had his £150,000 watch stolen. When the robbers were jailed Thompson said the incident meant "I no longer feel safe in London".[6]
