Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AOI) (Nasdaq: AAOI)[2] is an American company that designs and manufactures fiber-optic networking products for cable operators and optical semiconductor components for data center and cloud operators. It is headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas, and its common stock trades on the NASDAQ under the symbol AAOI.[2][3] The company was founded in 1997 by Chih-Hsiang (Thompson) Lin, a former University of Houston researcher, and completed its initial public offering in 2013.[4][5]
AOI operates a vertically integrated manufacturing model in which it grows its own semiconductor laser material, fabricates laser chips and subassemblies, and produces finished optical modules.[3] Its product portfolio spans optical transceivers used in AI data centers, networking equipment for cable television (CATV) broadband networks, and lasers and components for telecommunications and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications.[3] The company reported revenue of US$455.7 million for 2025 and had 4,691 employees as of December 31, 2025.[6][3][1]
History
Applied Optoelectronics was incorporated in Texas on February 28, 1997 by Chih-Hsiang (Thompson) Lin, who had served as a research scientist and research associate professor at the University of Houston.[3][4] The company reincorporated in Delaware in March 2013.[3] In 2000 it opened its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Sugar Land, Texas.[7] Its early operations concentrated on lasers and optical components and adopted a vertically integrated approach to manufacturing.[4]
AOI's shares began trading on the NASDAQ on September 26, 2013 under the symbol AAOI.[2] The offering was priced at $10.00 per share, below the initially proposed range of $13 to $15, and the company sold 3,600,000 shares.[5][8] The offering generated approximately $33.5 million in net proceeds; the underwriting was led by Raymond James and Piper Jaffray.[5][8]
During the mid-2010s AOI grew rapidly as a supplier of data center optical transceivers to large cloud operators. According to the company's Form 10-K for 2016, its two largest customers together accounted for roughly three-quarters of revenue that year, while its ten largest customers accounted for more than 95%.[9] This concentration contributed to share-price volatility: in August 2017 the stock fell sharply after AOI disclosed a slowdown in demand from a large data center customer.[10] Following disclosures in 2017 and 2018 concerning quality issues with certain lasers and transceivers, shareholders filed securities class-action lawsuits against AOI and two of its officers.[11] One consolidated action was settled for $15.5 million, funded by the company's directors' and officers' insurance.[11]
In September 2022 AOI announced an agreement to sell its manufacturing facilities in China and certain transceiver-related assets to Yuhan Optoelectronic Technology for $150 million, describing the move as a way to focus on its cable and laser businesses.[12] The company subsequently retained a data center transceiver business.
In December 2022 AOI entered a supply agreement with a large technology customer to manufacture certain lasers, and in June 2023 it signed a further agreement to provide design and assembly services.[13] Disclosure of the 2023 agreement in an SEC filing was followed by a sharp rise in AOI's share price.[13]
In March 2025 AOI entered a transaction agreement with a major customer under which it issued a warrant to purchase up to 7,945,399 shares at an exercise price of $23.6954 per share, exercisable until March 13, 2035.[14] About 1.32 million shares vested on issuance, with the remaining shares vesting as the customer and its affiliates made purchases of up to $4 billion under an associated manufacturing and development services agreement.[14]
In 2025 and 2026 AOI reported record quarterly and annual revenue, driven by demand from artificial-intelligence data centers and from cable operators upgrading to DOCSIS 4.0.[6][15] Full-year 2025 revenue rose 82.8% to $455.7 million, and the GAAP net loss narrowed to $38.2 million from $186.7 million in 2024.[6][3]
Products and technology
Optical transceivers
AOI offers optical transceivers across a range of speeds, including 40G, 100G, 200G, 400G, 800G and 1.6T, in industry-standard form factors such as SFP, QSFP, QSFP-DD and OSFP.[3]
During 2025 and 2026 AOI increased production of 800G transceivers and progressed through qualification with hyperscale customers, reporting its first volume shipment of 800G products in the first quarter of 2026.[16] In March 2026 the company announced its first volume order for 1.6T data center transceivers from a long-term hyperscale customer.[17]
Semiconductor components
AOI is vertically integrated and manufactures the majority of the laser chips and optical components used in its products.[3] It fabricates lasers using a combination of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).[3] In addition to using these components in its own modules, AOI supplies lasers and subassemblies to other equipment and transceiver manufacturers, particularly for telecommunications applications.[3]
Cable broadband (Quantum Bandwidth)
AOI supplies equipment for hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) cable television networks. In September 2022 it introduced a line of HFC products under the Quantum Bandwidth brand, including 1.8 GHz amplifiers designed to support DOCSIS 4.0 and downstream data rates up to 10 Gbps, together with QuantumLink remote-management software.[18]
In July 2025 Charter Communications certified AOI's 1.8 GHz amplifiers and QuantumLink software for deployment as part of Charter's network-evolution program.[19] In 2026 AOI announced that it was supporting Mediacom's nationwide DOCSIS 4.0 network upgrade with Quantum Bandwidth amplifiers and software.[20] Digicomm International has served as AOI's exclusive distribution partner for these products since 2023.[19]
In 2025 the CATV segment generated $245.1 million in revenue, exceeding the data center segment's $195.7 million.[6]
Manufacturing and operations
AOI has manufacturing and research-and-development facilities in the United States, Taiwan and China.[3] Its Sugar Land, Texas headquarters houses laser and laser-component fabrication, data center transceiver production, and research and development.[3] Through subsidiaries it operates facilities in Taipei, Taiwan and Ningbo, China, and it maintains a research-and-development facility in Atlanta, Georgia.[3][21]
AOI is developing a 210,000-square-foot manufacturing facility adjacent to its Sugar Land headquarters; the Office of the Texas Governor described the project as representing more than $279 million in capital investment and expected to create about 500 jobs.[21] In April 2026 the company was awarded a $20,852,518 grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund, established under the Texas CHIPS Act, to support the expansion.[21]
In 2026, the company expanded its Houston-area footprint to roughly 900,000 square feet with the addition of three more buildings between Pearland and Missouri City, Texas, and outlined plans to increase its combined 800G and 1.6T transceiver production capacity.[22][23]
Markets
AOI operates in the data-center, cable broadband, telecommunications, and fiber-to-the-home markets.[3] Its customers include large cloud and hyperscale operators, and North American multiple-system operators such as Charter Communications and Mediacom.[19][20] The company has historically depended on a limited number of large customers for a substantial portion of its revenue, a risk it discloses in its regulatory filings.[3][9]
Competition
In optical transceivers, AOI competes with companies including Innolight (Zhongji Innolight), Eoptolink, Coherent, Lumentum and Hisense Broadband.[24][25] Industry analyses have identified Innolight as the largest transceiver supplier globally and Eoptolink among the top three, with the two Chinese firms together accounting for a majority of the high-speed modules ordered by some large buyers.[26] In 2025 and 2026 the US Department of Defense identified and added Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink to its Section 1260H list of Chinese military companies operating in the United States.[27]
Finances
AOI reported 2025 revenue of $455.7 million, up from $249.4 million in 2024, with a GAAP gross margin of 30.0% and a GAAP net loss of $38.2 million, narrowed from a $186.7 million loss in 2024.[6][3] For the first quarter of 2026 the company reported record revenue of $151.1 million and a GAAP net loss of $14.3 million, and it completed a public equity offering that added about $382.4 million of capital.[16]
