Andrew Butt is an Australian jazz musician, composer, educator, and producer based in Brisbane, Queensland. He is a recipient of a Churchill Fellowship and a multiple Queensland Music Awards winner. He is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Queensland and has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Career

Butt has worked as a performer, composer, and educator within the Australian music scene for more than three decades. He has led music programs in Brisbane, including at Marist College Ashgrove and Villanova College Coorparoo.

In 2013, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to undertake research in the United States examining pathways in jazz education from secondary school to professional performance.[1] His research included study in Chicago, Seattle, and New York.[2]

He later completed a PhD at the University of Queensland titled Jazz Up North Down Under: An inquiry into jazz performance, culture and identity through collaborative recitals in Queensland, Australia.[3]

He has toured internationally across four continents as both a performer and educator.[4]

He leads the ensemble Andrew Butt Trio +, which includes collaborators such as Toby Wren, Kellee Green, Aaron Jansz, and Nick Quigley.

Butt’s composition “The Alligator Escalator”, from the album Here & Now, won the Jazz Award at the 2013 Queensland Music Awards.[5]

In 2024, “Le Baiser Salé”, performed by Andrew Butt Trio +, won the Jazz Award at the Queensland Music Awards.[6]

His third album, Peregian, was nominated for Album of the Year at the Queensland Music Awards.[7]

The album received positive critical attention. In Rhythms Magazine, Des Cowley described the recording as refined and understated, noting its cohesive ensemble interplay.[8] Barry O’Sullivan, writing in Fine Music Magazine, described Butt as a “master of his instrument” and highlighted the album’s “harmonious collaborations”.[9] A review in Dingo Jazz Journal characterised the album as a “sonic journey steeped in place, memory and the intimacy of live performance”.[10]

His 2017 album Blueberry Ash was also reviewed internationally. In All About Jazz, Barry O’Sullivan described the recording as an expressive and lyrical contribution to contemporary jazz.[11]

His work has been featured on national radio, including on Jazztrack on ABC Jazz.[12]

He is a member of the Artistic Team and committee of the Brisbane International Jazz Festival.[13]
