Comment: Unfortunately this rewritten version appears to have been created by an AI/LLM. Please see WP:NEWLLM. Given that there are eight previous declines, I don't think adding ninth decline will do anyone any favours. In solidarity, nil nz 07:35, 7 June 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Resubmission note (April 2026): Previous declines cited promotional tone and sourcing. This version addresses both specifically. (1) All promotional language and unsourced superlatives have been removed. (2) On notability and sourcing: this subject is already documented in the main Fire extinguisher article under the "Non-cylindrical designs" section (refs 47–49 in that article), where Core77, Global Design News, and Designboom were accepted by that article's editorial community as reliable sources for this exact subject — the same sources are used here. The standalone article expands technical engineering detail beyond what is appropriate for a single section in a general article. (3) A conflict of interest disclosure has been added per WP:COI and WP:PAID. XxMikeWorldxx (talk)

A flat toroidal fire extinguisher is a type of portable fire extinguisher that uses a ring-shaped (toroidal) pressure vessel instead of the traditional cylindrical design. The form factor was developed in the late 2010s and received EN 3-7 certification in 2019.[1][2] The design is documented in the main Fire extinguisher article as a certified example of a non-cylindrical pressure vessel configuration.
Development
Portable fire extinguishers have used cylindrical pressure vessels since their development in the 19th century.[3] The cylindrical form provides structural efficiency for containing pressurised agents but results in a wall projection depth typically between 150 and 200 mm for standard 4–6 kg units.
In 2017, Czech architect Přemysl Kokeš began development of a non-cylindrical design following his experience with a building fire.[2] Working with architect Zuzana Ambrožová and designer David Rosinai, the team developed a flat pressure vessel using toroidal geometry.[4] The design was manufactured by Czech company Amplla, which was established in 2019 for this purpose.[5] EN 3-7 certification for the design was obtained in 2019.[1]
Technical design
Pressure vessel geometry
The toroidal pressure vessel forms a ring approximately 620 mm in outer diameter with a wall projection depth of 80–90 mm,[1][2] compared to the 150–200 mm depth typical of cylindrical units of equivalent agent capacity. The vessel is constructed from steel and operates at 15 bar working pressure using nitrogen as propellant.[1]
Toroidal geometry distributes hoop stress around the ring structure. Standard pressure vessel engineering for toroidal geometries requires increased wall thickness compared to cylindrical vessels at equivalent pressure ratings, due to compound curvature.[6] The design complies with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU and carries CE marking issued by SZÚ Brno (Notified Body NB 1015, test laboratory no. 1045, accredited to ISO/IEC 17025).[1]
Extinguishing agent and fire ratings
The units contain ABC dry powder (monoammonium phosphate) extinguishing agent.[1] Two variants are produced:
- P21 model: 4 kg agent capacity, fire rating 21A 113B C
- P34 model: 6 kg agent capacity, fire rating 34A 183B C
The fire rating nomenclature follows EN 3 conventions: the numeral preceding A indicates extinguishing capacity equivalent to that multiple of 1.25 litres of water; the numeral preceding B indicates the area of flammable liquid fire in square feet that an average user is expected to extinguish. Both variants share identical external dimensions. The design operates within the temperature range of −30 °C to +60 °C, consistent with EN 3-7 requirements, and carries an electrical safety rating for equipment up to 1000 V at a minimum distance of 1 m.[1]
Discharge mechanism
The discharge mechanism, valve assembly, and safety components are housed within the toroidal volume, protected by the external structure.[1] The design incorporates a carrying strap intended to allow the unit to be held on the forearm during deployment.[2] One variant includes a removable external cover that can be fitted with different surface finishes, intended for aesthetic integration into interior spaces.[7][4]
Certification and standards
The design is certified under:
- EN 3-7 (European standard for portable fire extinguishers)
- Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014/68/EU
- CE marking (Notified Body NB 1015, SZÚ Brno, accredited to ISO/IEC 17025)
Certification testing verified pressure vessel integrity, discharge performance, and fire suppression effectiveness in accordance with EN 3-7 parameters.[1] The design operates within the same temperature range and electrical safety parameters as standard EN 3-7 certified cylindrical extinguishers.[1]
Applications
The reduced projection depth allows installation in narrow corridors, residential hallways, and architectural spaces where standard cylindrical extinguishers would protrude excessively or require recessed mounting.[2] The design has been adopted primarily in commercial and residential buildings where visible integration of fire safety equipment is specified.[4]
Units are manufactured in Hlinsko, Czech Republic, and have been installed in European commercial and residential properties.[5][8]
Recognition
The design received recognition in industrial design competitions for its aesthetic and form-factor characteristics:
- iF Design Award Gold (2022)[9]
- Red Dot Design Award, Product Design category (2022)[10]
- Czech Grand Design, Manufacturer of the Year (2022)[11]
The design was exhibited at Expo 2020 in Dubai as part of the Czech national pavilion.[5][8]
Analysis and reception
Design publication Core77 noted the departure from traditional cylindrical geometry but raised concerns about recognisability during emergencies: "In a real emergency someone may run right past this not realising what it is."[2] The publication also noted that the one-handed operation mechanism is configured for left-hand use only, which may limit accessibility for right-hand-dominant users or those with left-side mobility limitations.[2]
Coverage in industrial design media, including Designboom[7] and Global Design News,[1] focused primarily on aesthetic aspects rather than technical fire suppression performance.
No independent comparative testing data has been published examining fire suppression effectiveness, agent discharge characteristics, or long-term reliability of the toroidal design against standard cylindrical units of equivalent agent capacity and fire rating. The design is positioned at a price premium relative to cylindrical extinguishers of comparable capacity, reflecting its niche market positioning.[4]
