She is the founder and principal of Barker Architecture Office (BAAO), and serves as Associate Professor in the Masters in Architecture program and Academic Coordinator of the Master of Science in Architecture program at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, where she has taught since 2001.[1] She is known for bringing together architectural practice, pedagogy, and community-oriented design including sustainable and material experimentation.

Her undergraduate work in Visual and Environmental Studies was completed at Harvard College, where she graduated magna cum laude.[4]

Career

Barker founded her practice, Barker Architecture Office (BAAO), in 2006.[5] The Brooklyn-based firm works across residential, educational, cultural, and speculative design, often emphasizing adaptability, sustainability, and social engagement. BAAO’s projects have received recognition from organizations including AIA New York, Architizer, SARA National, and NYCxDESIGN, and have been featured in national and international exhibitions and publications.[6] A monograph of the firm’s work, BAAO,[7] was published in 2019 by ORO Editions.

Since 2001, Barker has taught core and Directed Research architecture studios and history/theory seminars at Pratt Institute, where she has served as Assistant Chair and subsequently as Interim Chair of the Graduate Architecture/Landscape Architecture/Urban Design department.[8] She has been the recipient of several national, regional, and institutional grants, from institutions such as NCARB and FIPSE/CSDS, to develop architectural pedagogy that strengthens connections between practice and the academy, creates integrative course structures that combine building technology and design, and brings innovative approaches to design education to beginning designers in underserved communities. She also directed the Pratt Young Scholars Program from 2018 to 2022.[9]

In 2025, Barker received the Arnold W. Brunner Grant from the AIA New York Center for Architecture for her research “Climate-Adaptive Vernacular Building Practices of Mexico City and Oaxaca.”[10]
