Alantre (meaning "Forward" in Spanish and "Adiante" in Galician) is a political party that is the heir to the left-wing movements in the Leonese Country, which have been demanding autonomy since 1977. Its political objectives are: freedom, equality, democracy, socialism, environmentalism, feminism, and federal self-government for the Leonese people, within a framework of solidarity and cooperation.
The party defines itself as a collective of women and men who embrace the values of democratic socialism and feminism. It brings together people from across the left, many with backgrounds in grassroots activism, united by a shared understanding that recognizes the people of León as a distinct political entity with the right to self-government. Its members consider themselves heirs to and participants in the historical struggle, as the Cradle of Parliamentarism, in the pursuit of freedom, democracy, tolerance in diversity, peace, dignity, solidarity, and equality among individuals and nations.
Its founding principles are: Self-government and federalism, Progressive and differentiated taxation, Defense of Public Services, Transparency, direct democracy, Environmentalism, Equal opportunities, Feminism, LGTBI+, Social Rights, Leonese languages, Historical Memory, Communication and mobility network, Energy sovereignty, Development and sustainability, Diaspora, and Culture.
A fundamental characteristic of this party is the separation of powers. Those holding the positions of federal secretary and president cannot be elected officials of any public representative institution or association. This measure is taken to maintain the independence of the political project, free from the personal ambitions that often arise in traditional politics.
History
Its foundation comes after more than 40 years of various attempts to create a popular sovereignty option independent of traditional political parties. Its primary origin lies in the social and political demand for self-government as a means to mitigate the social and economic decline suffered by the citizens of the Leonese Country due to the policies of centralist parties. Its objective is to build a sovereign, federal, and solidarity-based party where the inhabitants of the Leonese Country can vote for a left-wing option that is solely dependent on the will of the people of León and its surrounding regions.
Several individuals, unknown to the general public but known among themselves for their participation in protests, rallies, and social demonstrations advocating for increased rights and opposing the decline in living standards, began establishing channels of communication and debate regarding the state of implemented policies. Due to the 2020 lockdown, these conversations took place primarily online.
Faced with this situation, and after several informal meetings, they decided to organize themselves in what they called the initial assembly, in September 2021, with 23 people attending in person and 10 participating remotely. This meeting took place in a café in the working-class neighborhood of San Claudio in the city of León, and was attended by working-class men and women, mostly from community-based, grassroots, and resilient organizations advocating for an improved quality of life for the poor. These individuals agreed on the urgent need to develop a collective, social, and solidarity-based project, independent of large political structures, that would finally empower citizens against the dominant political parties that had led to the virtual disappearance of their communities.
Thus, the founding assembly took place on February 27, 2022, with a total of 60 people in a café in the center of León. The assembly included virtual presentations from various young people who participated in its founding, joining from their places of residence, such as Washington, Madrid, Berlin, Ponferrada, Zamora, Barcelona, and Valladolid, among others. This assembly created different working groups with the aim of giving organic life to the still-developing project.
Finally, and for the first time in the history of the Leonese Country, the first left-wing party of the people of León was created with the constitution of the Constituent Congress. Its objective was to establish a common ground for the defense of egalitarian, democratic, and sovereign principles that would guarantee the protection of collective and individual rights, in a system that until then had been dominated by large parties that neglected the needs of their constituents through subservience to the party that placed them on the ballot, forgetting basic democratic principles.
The party was presented to the media in September 2022 in the Plaza de la Culebra, Ástorga, with a political rally where it unveiled its slogan, founding principles, statutes, code of ethics, and anthem. Following its presentation, the party declared its commitment to being a work in progress and invited the entire community to participate in the political discussions that would shape the organization's direction. At that time, only a minimal structure had been established, subject to future reforms and expansions based on these discussions. In this way, the first left-wing party in León was formed.
Among its founders are the artist José Manuel Redondo, known as "Lolo", who designed the party's logo, and the singer-songwriter Javier Morán, who composed the party's official song in the three languages of the Leonese Country. The rest of the people who make up the organization were unknown in local politics and the press.
Election results
The Alantre party first ran in the municipal elections[1] of May 2023, for the Ardón council, winning one seat, and for the León council. It also fielded candidates in various neighborhood councils, where it obtained representation.
At the end of January 2026, he announced his candidacy[1] for the 2026 elections to the Cortes of Castilla y León.
Political agreements with other parties
Alantre has relationships and agreements with groups of the same political leanings and convictions, such: Cantabristas, Aían Asturies, Nuevo Extremeñismo, Chunta Aragonesista, Proyecto Drago, Compromís.
These parties advocate for the consolidation of sovereign, progressive, and solidarity-based projects, for a pluralistic left deeply rooted in its territories. Throughout this legislative term, the political party Alantre has given voice to the problems of the Leonese Country through its representative from Chunta Aragonesista, Jorge Pueyo Sanz.
