Able Computing (PNG) was established as a Papua New Guinea–based information technology company founded in Port Moresby in 1985. The company specialised in enterprise financial systems, accounting software distribution, and government systems integration, with a focus on nationwide public-sector and industry deployments during the late 1980s.
Geoff Lazberger founded the company and served as Chief Executive Officer from 1985 to 1990. During this period, Able Computing delivered systems both directly and through a national dealer network, which included professional services firms such as Deloitte and PwC. In 1990, the company was sold to Pacific Industries.
History
Founding and early operations (1985–1990)
Able Computing (PNG) was founded in 1985 in Port Moresby by Geoff Lazberger, who served as CEO until 1990. From inception, the company focused on enterprise and government computing, at a time when computing capability in Papua New Guinea was limited and largely supplied by costly multinational vendors.
Between 1985 and 1990, Able Computing implemented accounting and finance systems nationwide. Delivery was undertaken both directly by the company and via a structured national dealer network, enabling coverage across provincial and regional centres.
Software distribution
From 1985 though to 1990, Able Computing held national distribution and implementation rights in Papua New Guinea for several enterprise platforms, including:
- Arrow Accounting Software
- CBA Accounting Software
- Dataflex 4GL
- Novell networks
- Numerous in-house developed applications and customisations
These platforms were deployed across government entities, statutory authorities, as well as small, medium and large private enterprises, supporting the country’s early transition to computerised financial management.
Major national projects awarded
PNG International Tender 1: Cape Rodney Rubber Project
Able Computing won the National Cape Rodney Rubber Project tender in partnership with ICL Computers, in competition with multinational vendors including IBM, NCR, and NEC. The project demonstrated the capacity of a locally founded PNG systems developer and integrator to deliver enterprise-scale solutions.
PNG International Tender 2: PNG Provincial Government finance system
Able Computing won the PNG Provincial Government Finance Tender and delivered a customised Able Commitment Finance System. The system was implemented across Provincial Governments in Papua New Guinea, representing one of the earliest nationwide standardisations of public-sector financial management in the country.
Timber industry log tracking system
The company also developed a bespoke Log Tracking Finance System for the Papua New Guinea timber industry. The system integrated log tracking, production data, and financial accounting to address sector-specific operational and regulatory requirements.
PNG National Election Tally Room (1989)
In 1989, Able Computing computerised the National Election Tally Room for the first time in Papua New Guinea’s history, replacing manual aggregation with computer-assisted tallying. This marked the historic first use of computing technology for national election result consolidation in the country.
Sale
In 1990, Able Computing (PNG) was sold to Pacific Industries, concluding Geoff Lazberger’s tenure as Chief Executive Officer.
Historical significance
Able Computing’s activities during the late 1980s have been noted for distribution of best in class amounting software and integrated customisations, early nationwide deployment of computerised government finance systems, successful competition with multinational technology firms in public tenders, the introduction of computing to national election processes, and the development of industry-specific enterprise systems, particularly for forestry.
