ARTiSTORY (Chinese: 艺述事) is a cultural intellectual property (IP) licensing company founded in 2021 by Yizan He.[1] The company brokers licensing agreements between cultural institutions and consumer retail brands. Its operations within China are conducted through a subsidiary, Shanghai Xinzhengxin IP Service Co., Ltd.[2]
History
ARTiSTORY operates under a business model originating from its predecessor company, Alfilo Brands (Chinese: 品源文华), which was established by Yizan He in 2013.[3] In October 2019, Alfilo Brands secured a $16 million A+ funding round led by Sequoia Capital China.[4] Building on this foundation, ARTiSTORY was established as a new, distinct global entity in 2021.[5]
Operations and partnerships
The company's primary business model involves translating historical artifacts and artworks into consumer merchandise, physical retail spaces, and location-based entertainment.[6] ARTiSTORY holds master licensing agreements with several international cultural institutions, including:
- The British Library[7]
- Centre Pompidou[8]
- National Gallery Company, London[9]
- Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
- Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum
- Benaki Museum
- National Palace Museum, Taipei[10]
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum
On the retail side, the company works with nearly 100 brand partners to develop consumer products, including Amazon, Estée Lauder, L’Oréal, and Xiaomi.[11] According to The Art Newspaper, consumer products developed through the company's cultural IP collaborations have achieved significant distribution; one specific product collaboration resulted in 250 million units sold, and the company's licensing operations historically drove 24 million annual visitors to the British Museum's Tmall online store.[12]
