Coprococcus is a genus of anaerobic bacteria in the family Lachnospiraceae. The type species is Coprococcus eutactus.[1] The genus was originally described for Gram-positive, nonmotile cocci isolated from human feces.[2]
Some members of the genus produce butyrate during carbohydrate fermentation and form part of the human gut microbiota.[3] Reduced relative abundance of sequences assigned to Coprococcus has been reported in a study of patients with colorectal cancer.[4]
Taxonomy
The name Coprococcus is derived from the Ancient Greek kopros, meaning excrement or feces, and kokkos, meaning berry.[1]
LPSN recognizes seven species with correct names in the genus: C. aceti, C. ammoniilyticus, C. eutactus, C. hominis, C. intestinalis, C. intestinihominis, and C. phoceensis.[1]
Genome-based analyses led to the transfer of several species formerly assigned to Coprococcus. Coprococcus comes was transferred to Allocoprococcus as A. comes; C. catus and C. immobilis were transferred to Pseudocoprococcus; and C. mobilis was transferred to Faecalimonas.[5]
Phylogeny
Nomenclature follows the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN),[1] with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) taxonomy database used as an additional reference.[6]
