Toksin

Toksin (dari bahasa Yunani Kuno: τοξικόν, translit. toxikon) adalah sebuah zat beracun yang diproduksi di dalam sel atau organisme hidup,[1][2] kecuali zat buatan manusia yang diciptakan melalui proses artifisial. Kata ini pertama dipakai oleh kimiawan organik Ludwig Brieger (1849–1919).[3]

Untuk zat beracun yang tidak diproduksi di dalam organisme hidup, "toksikan" dan "toksik" sering dipakai.

Toksin bisa berupa molekul kecil, peptida, atau protein yang mampu menciptakan penyakit melalui sentuhan atau serapan oleh jaringan tubuh yang berinteraksi dengan makromolekul biologis, seperti enzim atau reseptor seluler. Toksin memiliki tingkat merusak yang sangat beragam, mulai dari kecil dan akut (misalnya sengatan lebah) hingga mematikan (misalnya toksin botulinum).
