Sofisme

Sofisme suatu sikap yang berpendapat bahwa kebenaran itu relatif adanya. Disebut demikian karena yang pertama-tama mempraktikkannya adalah kaum sofis, nama suatu kelompok cendekiawan yang mahir berpidato pada zaman Yunani kuno. Mereka selalu berusaha memengaruhi khalayak ramai dengan argumentasi-argumentasi yang menyesatkan yang disampaikan melalui pidato-pidato mereka agar terkesan kehebatan mereka sebagai orator-orator ulung.

Para kaum Sofis dianggap sebagai pendiri sekolah modern, di mana orang-orang yang bersekolah harus membayar untuk memperoleh ilmu-ilmu yang ingin didapatkan. Sekolah-sekolah Sofisme menghasilkan para orator, politikus, bangsawan dan public figure terkemuka pada masa Yunani Kuno.

Tokoh-tokoh Sofis yang terkemuka antara lain Protagoras, Gorgias, Thrasymakos, dan Kratylos.
