Skat
Skat (bahasa Inggris: scute, Latin scutum) adalah lapisan luar tempurung dilapisi oleh sisik-sisik keras yang merupakan bagian dari kulit luarnya, atau epidermis. Skat terbuat dari protein berserat yang disebut keratin yang juga membentuk sisik pada reptil lainnya. Skat ini tumbuh melebihi lapisan-lapisan antara tulang-tulang tempurung dan menambah kekuatan tempurung. Beberapa kura-kura tidak memiliki skat yang keras. Contohnya, penyu berpunggung kulit dan labi-labi yang memiliki tempurung yang dilapisi kulit skat yang halus dan bukan skat yang keras.
