Sel beta (Sel β) adalah sejenis sel yang ditemukan di pulau pankreas yang mensintesis dan mengeluarkan insulin. Sel beta berjumlah sekitar 50-70% dari sel di pulau pankreas dalam tubuh manusia.[1]
Hormon Insulin berfungsi untuk menurunkan kadar gula dalam darah. Apabila kadar gula dalam darah berlebihan, maka insulin akan menyimpan gula berlebih tersebut dalam hati. Apabila hormon insulin tidak ada atau sedikit, maka orang tersebut akan terkena penyakit diabetes melitus.[2][3]
Pada pasien dengan diabetes tipe I atau tipe II, massa dan fungsi sel beta berkurang sehingga dapat menyebabkan sekresi insulin tidak mencukupi dan hiperglikemia.[3]
