Protosphagnum nervatum adalah satu-satunya spesies yang diketahui dari ordo Protosphagnales. Spesies ini hanya diketahui dari catatan fosil Perm. Dalam banyak hal, tumbuhan ini menyerupai genus lumut yang masih hidup, yaitu Sphagnum, meskipun sel daunnya tidak dimorfik sekuat pada Sphagnum.[2]
