Noctuidae, umumnya dikenal sebagai ulat burung hantu atau ulat grayak, adalah keluarga yang paling kontroversial dalam keluarga super Noctuoidea karena banyak dari klad ini yang terus berubah, bersama dengan keluarga lain dari Noctuoidea.[1][2][3]

Tadinya dianggap sebagai keluarga terbesar dalam ordo Lepidoptera untuk waktu yang lama, tetapi setelah dikelompokkan kembali Lymantriinae, Catocalinae dan Calpinae masuk dalam keluarga Erebidae, maka sekarang keluarga Erebidae yang memegang gelar sebagai keluarga terbesar.[4]

Saat ini, Noctuidae merupakan keluarga terbesar kedua di Noctuoidea, dengan sekitar 1.089 genera dan 11.772 spesies.[5] Namun, klasifikasi ini kemungkinan besar bisa berubah, karena banyak perubahan yang terus muncul baik Noctuidae maupun Erebidae.
