Kosmos 261

Kosmos 261 (Rusia: Космос 261 berarti Cosmos 261), juga dikenal sebagai DS-U2-GK No.1, adalah satelit Soviet yang diluncurkan pada tahun 1968 sebagai bagian dari program Dnepropetrovsk Sputnik. Itu adalah pesawat ruang angkasa 347 kilogram (765 lb), yang dibangun oleh Biro Desain Yuzhnoye, dan digunakan untuk mempelajari densitas udara di bagian atas atmosfer, dan menyelidiki aurora.

Roket pembawa Kosmos-2I 63SM digunakan untuk meluncurkan Kosmos 261 ke orbit Bumi rendah dari Situs 133/1 di Kosmodrom Plesetsk. Peluncuran terjadi pada 23:55:00 UTC pada tanggal 19 Desember 1968, dan mengakibatkan sukses penyisipan satelit ke orbit. Setelah mencapai orbit, satelit ditugaskan Kosmos peruntukannya, dan menerima International Designator 1968-117A. Amerika Utara Aerospace Komando Pertahanan ditugaskan nomor katalog 03624.

Kosmos 261 adalah yang pertama dari dua DS-U2-GK satelit yang akan diluncurkan. Ia beroperasi di orbit dengan perigee dari 201 kilometer (125 mil), sebuah apogee dari 611 kilometer (380 mil), 71 derajat kemiringan, dan periode orbit 92,68 menit. Meluruh decay dari orbit dan masuk kembali atmosfer pada 12 Februari 1969.
