Juru api

Mekanik ketel uap, disebut pula "juru api" atau "stoker"

Juru api atau stoker[1] adalah nama pekerjaan dari orang yang bekerja menangani perapian dalam menjalankan mesin uap. Di Indonesia, baik sebutan juru api maupun stoker digunakan dalam operasi lokomotif uap dan kapal api, sementara dalam pengoperasian mesin-mesin uap stasioner semisal yang digunakan di kilang-kilang gergaji, istilah stoker lebih lazim digunakan. Juru api disebut fireman dalam struktur kepangkatan Angkatan Laut Kerajaan Inggris, Heizer dalam bahasa Jerman, stoker dalam bahasa Belanda, dan watertender (disingkat WT) dalam struktur kepangkatan Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat. Sebagian besar kegiatan dalam pekerjaan ini sangat menguras tenaga, misalnya menyekopkan bahan bakar, biasanya batu bara, ke dalam tungku mesin.[2]
