Jacob Appelbaum adalah peneliti keamanan komputer dan peretas independen. Ia dipekerjakan oleh University of Washington[3] dan merupakan anggota inti Tor project. Appelbaum dikenal karena pernah mewakili Wikileaks di konferensi HOPE 2010.[5] Ia berulang kali menjadi target badan penegak hukum Amerika Serikat yang diizinkan pengadilan untuk memperoleh data akun Twitter-nya, menahannya 12 kali di perbatasan AS setelah terbang dari luar negeri,[6] dan menyita sebuah laptop dan beberapa telepon genggam.
Appelbaum, dengan nama pengguna "ioerror", merupakan anggota aktif komunitas peretas Cult of the Dead Cow sejak 2008[7] sekaligus pendiri hackerspace Noisebridge asal San Francisco bersama Mitch Altman.
