Hipnos

Hipnos (bahasa Yunani: Ὕπνος) adalah dewa yang menguasai tidur dalam mitologi Yunani, (di mitologi Romawi dikenal sebagai Somnus). Saudara kembarnya adalah Thanatos, dewa kematian. Hipnos juga merupakan saudara dari Nemesis dan Moirai. Ibu mereka adalah Niks, dewi malam. Tiga anak laki-laki Hipnos, (Morfeus, Fantassos dan Ikelos atau Fobetor) adalah dewa mimpi. Istananya adalah sebuah gua yang gelap di mana matahari tidak pernah bersinar. Sungai Lethe, sungai kelalaian mengalir melalui gua ini.

Suatu ketika, Endimion divonis oleh Zeus untuk tidur abadi. Hipnos kemudian membuatnya tidur dengan mata terbuka agar Endimion bisa terus melihat kekasihnya, Selene.

Istilah hipnosis berasal dari nama Hipnos.
