Gens

Dalam Romawi kuno, gens (/ˈɡɛns/ atau /ˈdʒɛnz/), jamak gentes, adalah keluarga yang terdiri dari semua individu yang berbagi nomen yang sama dan mengklaim keturunan dari nenek moyang yang sama. Cabang dari gens disebut stirps (jamak stirpes). Gens adalah struktur sosial yang penting di Roma dan di seluruh Italia selama periode Republik Romawi. Sebagian besar kedudukan sosial seseorang bergantung pada gensnya. Gentes tertentu dianggap patrician, yang lain plebeian, sementara beberapa memiliki cabang patrician dan plebeian. Pentingnya keanggotaan dalam gens menurun secara signifikan pada masa kekaisaran.[1][2]
