Edeko
Edeko (ejaan lain: Edikon, Ediko, Edika, Ethiko) adalah tokoh pasca keruntuhan Romawi Barat.[1] Banyak cendekiawan menyatakan tokoh tersebut sebagai:
- Seorang Hun terkemuka, yang menjabat sebagai wakil dari Attila dan duta besar untuk Romawi Timur (tahun 449).[1][2]
- Seorang kepala suku Skiren, yang dikalahkan pada Pertempuran Bolia oleh Ostrogoth di sungai Bolia di Panonia sekitar akhir dasawarsa 460-an.[3]
- Idikon atau Ediko,[1] ayah dari Odoaker, yang menjadi magister militum di Angkatan Darat Kekaisaran Romawi dan Raja Italia pertama (476–493).[1]
Etimologi
Otto Maenchen-Helfen menganggap nama Hunnik Έδέκων (Edekon) diserap dari suatu bahasa Jermanik atau nama yang terjermanikisasi, tetapi tidak menyebutkan turunan namanya dari bahasa mana.[1]
Omeljan Pritsak berpendapat nama tersebut diturunkan dari akar kata kerja dalam bahasa Turk Kuno yaitu *edär- (berarti "mengejar", "mengikuti"), dan akhiran kata benda deverbal κων (kun < r-k < r-g < *gun).[2] Bentuk yang direkonstruksi adalah *edäkün (< *edär-kün; berarti "pengikut", "pelayan").[4]
