David Lee Chaum adalah seorang ilmuwan komputer kriptografer, dan penemu dari Amerika Serikat. ia lahir pada tahun 1955 dan menjadi pelopor kriptografi dan teknologi yang melindungi privasi, dan dikenal sebagai penemu kas digital.[1]
Disertasinya pada tahun 1982, "Computer Systems Established, Maintained, and Trusted by Mutually Suspicious Groups" adalah proposal pertama yang diketahui mengenai protokol blockchain. Disertasi Chaum, lengkap dengan kode untuk mengimplementasikan protokol tersebut, mengajukan hampir seluruh elemen blockchain yang digunakan dalam whitepaper bitcoin.[2]
Ia dikenal sebagai "bapak anonimitas daring" dan "bapak baptis mata uang kripto".
