Begum

Begum adalah gelar yang diberikan kepada perempuan terhormat di Asia Selatan. Gelar ini diberikan kepada kaum perempuan bangsawan pada tahap tertentu dalam kehidupan mereka, termasuk pada saat kelahiran seorang anak laki-laki. Kata ini berasal dari bahasa Arab dan Urdu yang menandakan bahwa mereka dibebaskan dari berbagai urusan rumah tangga. Misalnya Begum Hazrat Mahal, Jahanara Begum dll.

Dalam bahasa sehari-hari, kata ini digunakan oleh kaum laki-laki Muslim di Asia Selatan untuk merujuk kepada istri mereka sendiri atau kepada seorang perempuan yang sudah menikah atau yang menjanda. Misalnya Begum Nusrat Bhutto, Begum Khaleda Zia.
