Basmati adalah varietas beras aromatik panjang berbutir ramping yang secara tradisional ditanam di India, Pakistan, dan Nepal.[1][2] Pada 2018–2019, India menyumbang 65% dari perdagangan internasional beras basmati, sementara Pakistan menyumbang 35% sisanya.[3][4] Banyak negara menggunakan tanaman padi basmati yang ditanam di dalam negeri; tetapi, basmati secara geografis eksklusif untuk distrik tertentu di India, Nepal, dan Pakistan.
Menurut badan Pemerintah India APEDA, varietas padi memenuhi syarat untuk disebut basmati jika memiliki panjang beras giling rata-rata minimum 6,61 mm dan lebar beras giling rata-rata hingga 2 mm, di antara parameter lainnya.
