Audisme, sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh salah seorang Tuli aktivis, adalah bentuk diskriminasi terhadap orang Tuli, budaya Tuli, dan penggunaan bahasa isyarat.[1] Pada 1975, Tom L. Humphries menemukan istilah tersebut di dalam sebuah manuskrip yang tidak diterbitkan.[2][3] Tidak ada yang menggunakan istilah tersebut hingga Harlan Lane menggunakannya di dalam tulisannya. Humphries sebenarnya menggunakan istilah audisme pada perilaku dan praktik individual; sedangkan Lane memperluas penggunaannya pada penindasan dan penyingkiran terhadap orang Tuli.[4]
